Knight-Light Script Sample
One of my earlier attempts a "script" for videogame dialogue. This was written with the intent to be used in a voice acted movie that would play before the main game started. We did not find a way to implement the movie before the deadlne but the script was still used and served to set up the context for our game.
Mother=M
K=Kid
[ ] = Possible cutscene directions
Cutscene needs to:
• Introduce context and premise (protect the child afraid of the ‘monster’s in the dark).
• Introduce the main playable character, Ser-Teddalot.
• Introduce primary objectives and mechanics (use Ser-Teddalot’s flashlight to reveal the monsters’ true forms and proceed towards the closet door)
[Darkness]
M: Honey, it is way past your bedtime. Turn off the lights and go to bed.
K: Can’t I keep them on a little longer? Just for tonight?
M: Honey, no. Remember what happened last time? You were up all night and falling asleep all day afterwards.
K: But mom-
M: No buts. We talked about this, remember?
K: I know but…[small text] …it makes the monsters away…
M: *sigh* I know. But you need your sleep. Which is why…
[Next pic, with Ser Teddalot and flashlight]
M: …You have Ser-Teddalot to make the monsters go away while you get your rest. You trust Ser-Teddalot to keep you safe, right?
K: [small text] Yeah…
M: And you don’t want to make him worry about you, right?
K: [small text] Yeah…but…some of the things are really big and scary and he’s so little…
M: Well, that’s why you need to believe in him. If you believe in him, it’ll give him the strength he needs to defeat anything. You just need to hold onto him and repeat to yourself, ‘No matter how scary things seem, no matter how dark it gets, Ser-Teddalot will protect me’. Okay?
K: [normal size text] Okay. *rustle* No matter how scary things seem, no matter how dark it gets, Ser-Teddalot will protect me.
M: There. Nothing can stop him now.
[Show the closet door]
M: Now before I go, I want to show you something.
[Closet Door opens]
M: See? No monsters.
K: I guess…
M: Do you think you’ll be alright?
K: Yeah. I’ll be okay now, I think.
M: Okay then. Good night, honey.
K: G’nite, mom.
[Lights dim]
K: *rustle* No matter how scary things seem, no matter how dark it gets, Ser-Teddalot will protect me…
K: …No matter how scary things seem, no matter how dark it gets, Ser-Teddalot will protect me…
K: ….. No matter how scary things seem, no matter how dark it gets, Ser-Teddalot will protect me….
[Pause]
[Shadow monsters appear at the closet door. The ‘Boss’ monster remains inside while smaller monsters leave the closet and approach the bed]
[As a shadow monster gets close to the bed, Ser-Teddalot comes to life and shines the flashlight on the monster. The monster is transformed into an ordinary object.]
[Ser-Teddalot leaves the bed and begins approaching the closet door and oncoming monsters. Cutscene ends and first level begins.]
